Monel 400

What is Monel 400?

Monel 400 (UNS N04400) is a nickel-copper alloy that is hardened by cold working only. Monel 400 has low corrosion rate in flowing seawater, therefore it is widely used in marine applications. Monel 400 also has excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking in most freshwaters. Monel 400 can be used in temperatures up to 1000 ºF. The alloy has great mechanical properties at subzero temperatures.

Is alloy 400 same as MONEL?

MONEL is a trademark of Special Metals Corporation under which a series of nickel-copper alloys are grouped. Commercially there are many types of MONEL available, such as alloy 400, alloy 401, alloy R-405, Alloy K-500 and Monel 404. The Monel 400 alloy is also known as super alloy monel.

What is Monel 400 cast equivalent?

SPECIALITY ALLOY VALVES A20/MONEL.
Forged Monel 400 (UNS N14400) and it’s cast equivalent A494 M35-1 are Nickel Copper Alloy Steels as is Monel K500. Global Supply Line can also supply valves manufactured in other Nickel Alloys such as 600, 625, and 825.

Is Monel 400 better than stainless steel?

Monel metal is stronger than stainless steel, making it ideal for applications where strength is important. Monel metal is more resistant to corrosion than stainless steel, making it the better choice for environments where corrosion is a concern.

What is Monel 400 made of?

Monel 400 is a Nickel-Copper alloy, resistant to sea water and steam at high temperatures as well as to salt and caustic solutions. Monel 400 is a nickel-copper alloy with excellent corrosion resistance in a wide variety of media.

Does Monel 400 rust?

Although Monel-400 is known for its ability to stand up to tough corrosive elements, pitting corrosion of Monel-400 occurs when it is exposed to stagnant salt water such as seawater. The corrosion rate of this alloy decreases sharply with increasing nickel content in the alloy.

Can Monel 400 be welded?

Monel can be welded with SMAW using a high-nickel electrode and direct current.

What is the difference between Monel 400 and K 500?

MONEL K500 retains the excellent corrosion resistant characteristics of 400 and has enhanced strength and hardness after precipitation hardening when compared with 400. Alloy K500 has approximately three (3) times the yield strength and double the tensile strength when compared with 400.

What temperature can Monel 400 withstand?

1000°F

The alloy is characterized by moderate strength, good weldability, good general corrosion resistance and toughness. It is useful at temperatures up to 1000°F (538°C).

What temperature does Monel 400 melt?

Monel 400 has great mechanical properties at subzero temperatures, can be used in temperatures up to 1000° F, and its melting point is 2370-2460° F. However, alloy 400 is low in strength in the annealed condition so, a variety of tempers may be used to increase the strength.
